Sex Under The Influence

Have you ever gotten drunk or high and then had sex with someone?  Many young adults have had unprotected sex and have regretted it.  Some of them can’t even remember if they actually had sex or not!

Plain and simple, alcohol and drugs cloud your judgment.

Here are the facts:

  1. Alcohol is not a sexual stimulant.  It’s actually a central nervous system depressant. It reduces anxiety and allows you to shed your inhibitions, so you end up doing things you would never do if you were sober.
  2. Drugs initially increase the blood flow to your brain, making everything seems exciting and fun.  With continued use, many of your senses and emotions become impaired.

Mixing sex with alcohol and drugs increases your chance of getting sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) and chance of unplanned pregnancies.  Why? Because if you have sex when you are drunk or high, you are less likely to be thinking clearly and will forget to use a condom.  Abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent STI’s.

To minimize your risk especially at a party or when out at a bar, try the following tips:

  1. USE A BUDDY SYSTEM.  Make sure one person stays sober so they can watch out for you.
  2. WATCH YOUR DRINK.  Don’t leave it unattended or take a drink from someone you do not know.
  3. MAKE DECISIONS WHILE YOU ARE SOBER.  Agree on a plan before you start drinking because drinking is Risky Business.
